I know a few other people use TinyFox - did the latest update give you a really weird transparent and unusuable browser too?
OK, for my dissertation presentation I would like to apply the model I developed to one or more new cases. Only I haven't exactly been in touch with the world these past months, so finding cases is tricky.

Open source activism is:
- Self activating. Nobody calls people to action, or at least nobody with a reasonable expectation of being followed. People mobilise more or less spontaneously.
- Self organising. There is no pre-existing organisational structure. Organisation is initiative-led and decentralised. Individuals take up the issue and do something to further it according to their own judgement.
- Crosses the boundary between online and offline. The movement should have offline effects. Ideally in the physical sense (feet on the street) but significant effect on a situation beyond the online sphere is also acceptable.

These three factors are sliding scales, not absolutes. The 'purest' form of open source activism I've found, and my main case, is Anonymous vs Scientology. I've also used the unofficial volunteer campaigning efforts during the Obama presidential campaign. My third case is the UK campaign in December to get Rage Against the Machine on number 1 in the Christmas charts.

I am sure there must be new movements by now - particularly surrounding the Catholic church and the oilspill, but I'm just not aware of them. If you are, please tell me in comments, ideally with what links and info you have (or good places to start looking). It doesn't have to be international or even national as long as there's sufficient (english language) information about it. If you're not sure if what you're thinking of applies, do tell! I might be able to use it anyway.
Earlier today I managed to dump my 0.5 litre mug full of hot sweet tea over my MS Natural keyboard. And desk. And floor. And self. Urgh.
I might be able to clean and fix it, but that will take a few days. My backup is an older model of the same keyboard, which I like a lot less, and turns out not to work anymore. I am now using a horrible straight plank as emergency backup. I apologise for worse than usual tyoping.

Thing is, I need a new one anyway so I have a backup, ideally I'd love another 'natural multimedia keyboard' like I was using, but nobody sells them anymore. Should have stockpiled while I could, just as I did with mice!

I know I have some split-geekboard keys split-keyboard geeks among you lot - does anyone know a source for cheap MS natural boards? I need QWERTY in US layout, so with @ above 2. Alternatively, any other boards that are decent and don't cost the world? I can't afford the newest MS Natural (45€!). Anything proclaiming to be ergonomic because it's curved or waved isn't useful to me, it has to be split. Wireless is no added value for me.

Feck

Mar. 12th, 2010 06:45 pm
PC infected. Feck! I think there may have been a 'you must reboot to update AVG' today - which I did, stupidly, but AVG doesn't need rebooting I think. Then there was an authenic looking AVG popup that said 'this site is not safe' or however it words it. While I was in fact on a perfectly legit site I visit often. I clicked OK. It directed me to a tredols.com site with an spl.php and now does that every time I go to that site.

It's this shit

Halp! AVG is not finding it and neither is Hitman Pro. What do I doooooo *wail*

Edit: four different scans haven't found anything. The site that had the problem is down 'due to problems' now so I suspect it may be a problem on their side. Thanks for the suggestions.
Upgrade disc arrived. Got it going last night - I started the actual upgrading between 00.00 and 00.30. Left it on overnight (new machine is soooo nice and quiet) It is now 13.52 and it's at 64%.

This is on a brand new machine that had only ever been turned on once since its vista install - I gave it a name and made a user account. That's it.

Something tells me this is not right..
OK, so the Acer Aspire X5810 isn't suitable because not upgradable. Two options that seem suitable to me follow. Please your pros/cons/that brand is shit/etc for the following:

Acer Aspire M3203
AMD Athlon II X4 620
4gb RAM
1 tb HD
ATI Radeon HD4650 1gb
Dual Layer DVD/rewriter/blu-ray player
Win 7

HP Pavilion P6130
Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200
4gb DDR3-SDRAM
1 tb HD
DVD/RW supermulti whatever
ATI Radeon HD4350
Fiahwiah
Win Vista with Win 7 upgrade

I have no clue how the processors compare. I think I understand that the Acer's videocard is better. The DVD drive isn't a priority. Firewire is nice but not hugely important. Both are at local shops and cost the same. Your opinionating is very welcome.
On sunday I will be going to a Working Equitation competition with Rowan. During the dressage test you are allowed to have music to accompany you. It will be purely background music (not choreographed like in musical kurs) but I do want it to be suitable music.

This is where you come in! I could use some ideas.

I need something about 6:30 mins long (or longer). That has some rhythm to it, but not too heavy. and that is interesting, but not  overpowering.  I have some nice film score music, but a lot of that is very building toward a crecendo, which doesn't fit the dressage test. A big moment in the music looks silly if I'm just walking around the ring at that moment.

Something Welsh celtic would be cool, as apparently the jury like themes (& hoss is a Welsh Cob) but I'm by no means wedded to that idea.

Unfortunately it turns out to be a lot easier to find music that clashes with the riding than music that complements it!

I'm currently thinking about parts of the Band of Brothers soundtrack, Brian Eno, and Enya as fallback (a lot of Enya has the right sort of deep rhythm without overpowering. Unfortunately I've not seen a track of hers that's long enough, and stitching together could get ugly)

If anyone has ideas I would be very happy to hear them. If possible with youtube links for easy quick listening.
This is driving me nuts! For the past few weeks I've received 5-10 of the exact same spam a day.

I have created filter rule after filter rule, and now have 3 rules, using different parameters (underlined), which I've copied in case of hidden characters. They should NOT be able to let this pass, but still it ends up in my inbox. Frustration is me.

Anyone else getting this shit? Any ideas?
Like, in the bottle. Not good!

Unhappy moment today as a loud POP! was heard from the wooden chest where the bottles live, and pink mead started to pour over the floor. One of the bottles of my C batch (blueberry melomel) had spat out its cork and emptied out. Damn! Besides it being a shame to lose 0.75l of what promised to become nice mead, I am now also worried about the rest of the batch. I transferred the other bottles to the fridge to cool down until I know what to do, but that isn't going to work long term.

The batch was completely stable for 2 or 3 weeks, then has Kalium Sorbate added, left for another week, showed no signs of life in any way, and was then bottled. The D batch got the same treatment.

I have no cool space to store the bottles. I live in a shared apartment so there just isn't space. They're at room temp - which is reasonably warm at the moment as it's warm outside. (odd though that it spat now, and not a few days ago when it was way warmer. Good though as I was on holiday and wouldn't have found it until days later)

What do I do? Open them all up? Add more Kalium Sorbate? The cork that got spat was pretty crappy, I wonder if that may have contributed. Anyway, halp!

New Phone

Jun. 24th, 2009 01:31 pm
I'm having a nice long runup to picking a new phone, which is good because I suck at decisiveness! Needs:

- Low to mid price region (I have a very low subscription and am not willing/able to put down a lump sum)
- decent camera
- either a normal full keyboard or a touchscreen full keyboard
- capable of Teh Internets
- Ideally I'd like it to be able to display word and/or pdf files so I can read a book on it. Not sure if this is an illusion in this price range
- One of the larger brands (for reasons of 'I always forget my charger')

I'm currently thinking about the Nokia E63 (full keyboard) and the Samsung Star (S5230) (touchscreen) which I guess just shows that I don't know what I want! Any insights?
I've recently switched to a new computer, and Because of Stuff I ended up importing all my music into itunes from the get-go. As a result I've been meeting new bits of my music collection.
I got Bob Dylan's 'Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall. Thought 'Hey, I love this song' and then heard Dylan's whiny voice and realised I'd heard a version of it I liked much better.

But I have no idea by whom.

Here's a list of covers of the track. I've found and ruled out Joan Baez and Brian Ferry. The others either sound unlikely  to be it, or I can't find them to listen.

Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to help me find covers of that song, ideally in streaming/youtube or easily downloadable format. If anyone can come by the Jason Mraz version that would be especially cool.

Edit: thanks for the input, it is almost certainly the Jason Mraz version. Which hopefully I will have soon.
