Someone Must Know (tm):
There's a game called 'Hollandse Leeuwen' in Dutch, and 'British Bulldogs' in the UK, and something else in America. There are one or two people in the middle of a playing field and the remaining players line up on one side, to cross the field on a signal. The person(s) in the middle need to tag the crossers. Once tagged, you join the taggers.

What is it called in America?

I'm sure someone mentioned the American name to me not long ago, but I just can't remember who it was, or where...

That's what we call it in Scotland (or Glasgow at least).

Each side in turn chants, "Red Rover, Red Rover, let $name come over" and named person switches lines. At some point (usually when the bell goes for the end of playtime) the two lines are complete and they charge each other.

That's not the same. The game I mean ends up with everybody in the middle and one person of the crossers left over because nobody managed to tag him or her. No names are called.

This page might be useful. Red Rover to me is a different game; I think we called this one Fox and Geese.

Pom Pom - if I use that name in a story, will people generally know what I mean? I will include some description of the game. My variant is not with tagging - you have to get people's feet off the ground for a moment instead.

I think as long as there is some description of the game, you'll be fine -- lots of kids' games have variant names so none is going to be familiar to everyone who reads it. The explanation is what will make it clear what's going on.

I don't know what it's called, but it's a dangerous game. It's how I lost my toenail...
