Olympics opening

Am I the only one who loves watching the parade? There's something about sporters representing a country that shows you the best and most hopeful essence. Korea walking together, all people hand in hand, and someone from North and someone from South carrying the flag together. Beautiful. The amazing dances and costumes from some of the more obscure countries. The huge roar Iraq's sporters got when they entered.
It's touching somehow, because it's a formal parade, but these are not tightly-drilled people walking in step; they are waving, bouncing around, kissing the camera, making photos, some of them on the phone. "Look mum, I'm here, I'm waving now!".
They're all so enthusiastic that for a little while I feel a bit better about the world. Maybe that's it.

Date: 2004-08-14 04:16 am (UTC)The Dutch merely deserved a "wot?!" and not outright mockery. IMO, if you have a very distinctive national colour you should use it. The Kiwis got it right.
The worst mockage was awarded to the Brits. Natty blazers combined with polo shirts and in those colours? Ewwww.
Most of the exotic uniforms were cool and far more interesting than suits. I particularly liked seeing the Pacific Island ones but that's because they're familiar rather than exotic. The French commentators couldn't get over the bare feet. *g*
You're not alone
I haven't had time to watch the whole thing since 1988, though. I taped 1992, 1996, and 2000, and only even had time to watch 1996.
Enjoy the Games!
How are you these days, BTW?

Date: 2004-08-13 11:56 pm (UTC)And I'm fine; still doing assembly line work - which is exhausting, so I don't get to much more than sleep, sleep and sleep in the weekends. Except this time I'm also going to the hairdresser ;-)
