THIS is terrifying. While everybody was distracted by Terry Schiavo's case and the Michael Jackson trail, this bill was snuck (sneaked?) in behind the curtain. Full media blackout on it, as these things go.

Oh and hey, while we're messing with this, let's raise the middle finger to the rest of the world:

it also restricts federal courts from recognizing the laws of foreign countries and international law [e.g., against torture, global warming, unjust wars, etc. - ed.] as the supreme law of our land."

Because clearly the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Covenant on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women and the Geneva Conventions don't apply to America...

Well, it was kinda nice knowing about democracy in the US of A. Hey, maybe I should have some kids, so I can tell them about it as a historical curiosity? Then again, the way things are going in .au, I might be better off ensuring that we don't have something similar slipping through our parliamentary system (although over here it's more likely to happen after June 30 - that's when the Libs get the majority in both the House of Reps and the Senate).

*argh* another thing to remind myself of if I ever start to get "homesick" for the place.
