The other day on #afp we talked about Subways (the sandwich chain) and I lamented the fact that there's none where it's useful to me.

Today I cycled through main street and what do I see? A newly opened Subways. Not where I would have liked it best (Utrecht station) but still cool, because I quite like them. If you want food on the go, Subways is about the best alternative there is.

Just a shame that they're using a fucking HUMMER as an opening stunt! It's parked in front of the door and blocking the walkway with it's bulk. I want to kick it. I also want to walk in to tell the chain manager that I'm damn close to boycotting them for using the fucking thing as their opening campaign. What's up with that? I thought they were vaguely into 'what's good for you'... Hummers aren't good for anyone on earth. I'm quiet happy to NEVER see them on the road here and I want it to stay that way.

In other news it's blisteringly hot today so it's no great party being in my room. I shall employ the downstairs computer until it cools down, I think.

It's probably an American thing. We used Hummers to open all of our US ones and it's cheaper to ship it and all the subway stuff over to open all the Dutch restaurants than to go and find a Smart and paint it in the subway colours.

Not a good argument, but then Hummers are good for some people (US Army usually)

As I PR person I'm just saying that it may be cheaper to use the same stuff as in the US, it will most certainly be more expensive in the end *because you loose people* because they're put off by the fugly thing and those people may well have come in to eat something if it had been a sympathetic opening stunt.

Marketing something like Subways (actually, marketing *anything*) requires actually Looking At The Target Group (ie cloggies, who as a rule don't go for that kind of vehicle) instead of using a one-size-fits-the-whole-world approach.

I still want to go and kick/key the damn thing.

That only works if the culture doing the advertising sees it. America is probably the biggest pusher of the 'one-size-fits-the-whole-world' approach. Look at the way they market almost everything else (at least in the UK), they just assume all Brits are Americans with funny accents.
