Well here is a nice selection...

First evening, Waterford. Getting to know the other trainees.

We're almost heading the parade of sail, so we get to see all the other ships :-)

They're fantastic! Europa is gorgeous. And those Russian ships are so gigantic ... long way up to that topmost yard on the Kruzenshtern. Looks like when the wind was good the sailing was fantastic.

Thanks for posting those. :)

Wow... I'm completely speechless... o_O

Those pictures are fantastic. Lovely ships! And as far as I can see, you had a wonderful time! I really wish I could do something like that some day, too. *sniffles and wipes tear of homesickness from eye*

Was it sort of a regatta you participated in? Or a sailing training? Or what was it? I don't know much about those things, sorry.

Thank you muchly for sharing those photos!

it's the largest tall ships event in the world. Next year will be its 50th birthday.

http://www.tallshipsraces.com/

It's like a huge regatta/meet-up/cruise in company for those ships. The race ports organise all kinds of cool stuff and everything is in the spirit of international understanding. Pretty neat.

And you *can* sail on ships like that. If you're serious, let me know if you want me find some ships that sail somewhere accessible for you. I'm seriously considering a uni project to promote tall ship sailing..

Wow, it would be really lovely to participate in such a thing. But then again, I've never been on a ship before and I don't know anything about sailing. I would have to do a sailing training before and as a trainee, I don't have enough money for this.

But I'll keep it in mind, and as soon as I'm done with my job training and have a well-paid job, I'll do one! :D

Hmm - accessible... I'm living in Southern Germany, but I'd be willing to travel ANYWHERE to be on a tall ship! :)

On sail training ships, they're assuming most people have never done it before. They'll teach you everything you need to know right there. Yes, you pay for it, but if you're willing to travel at short notice and especially if you have time outside of the holidays, it can be fairly cheap.

I've started with the Tall Ships Youth Trust, and consider them pretty good in giving you some basic experience and a taste of life at sea. Keep an eye on their special offers page and you might bump into something you can afford. site: http://www.tallships.org/

Ooooooooh! Whitby makes me think of that book that was made into a film... although it took place in the States... the one where they move a house... it was forcedly eccentric and thus won a Pulitzer prize... I think... the film has Kevin Spacey in it, again, I think... the Shipping News! That's the one!

Also, your jeans are here, and a shirt, and a pair of socks.

I haven't seen the Shipping News, maybe I should :-) Whitby was lovely. The kind of place where the word 'quant' comes to mind. And everybody was so very nice to us. Of the 4 ports we've been in, I liked Whitby best. Partly because it wasn't as insanely busy as the others, but mostly because it had real atmosphere.

My jeans? I'm fairly sure my 1 pair came home with me... Or do you mean the 3/4th shorter ones? And which shirt? Socks are entirely possible. Just hang on to it and we'll get it across at some point.

i come over from black pearl sails, and i have to tell you it is seriously hard not to be insanely jealous.

okay i'll be frank; i am jealous beyond words.

we were two mates from black pearl sails in dublin and we missed the races by a few days, flying out to paris, and i was biting my own ass over it. argh. i so have to go next year.

all the ships at waterford! it's breathtaking. argh.

and cherbourg is so pretty. did you get to go ashore? i lost my heart in normandy i'm afraid.

okay, you take care and all. i'll sit here cursing silently.

That's amazing. Goes to show you can live your dreams :)
I've wanted to sail since I was knee-high, I think after Peru I'm going to pursue that more thoroughly :D

Thanks so much for sharing your photos and information; the pictures are beautiful, and so exciting. My husband's not the least interested in sailing and even he was impressed.

Now back from CCDE and catching up.

The pictures are great and if you look at picture 3 in the sequence here (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_pictures/4715175.stm) there's a shot of Europa coming into Newcastle.

It does appear thought that you were on the best leg of the voyage as several ships haven't made it to Norway and the Polish ship Smialy hasn't been in contact since Saturday morning! :-(

Details here (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/tyne/4736497.stm).

Oh how nice. Yes, that's us sailing in. And extreme zoom reveils yours truly sitting on the bowsprit :)

I've heard about the problems; a lot of ships have retired the race... hopefully the crew of Smialy is safe and sound and in contact soon.

Came here from Black Pearl Sails. Am deep in that ugly emotion, envy. Beautiful pictures of exquisite ships. I swear I am going on one of those someday. Thanks for the post.

Wow, those pictures are awesome!!!
I just got back from a week at SAIL in Amsterdam, saw Europa there, she is truly beautiful!!
Kruzenshtern was one of my favourite ships there, as were Vespucci and Mir. I think the Russians are pretty lucky for having all these incredible ships (saw Sedov there too). Thanks for posting all these wonderful pictures!! You're so lucky for sailing on Europa! :)
