Sailing photos
Jul. 31st, 2005 09:40 pmWell here is a nice selection...
First evening, Waterford. Getting to know the other trainees.

We're almost heading the parade of sail, so we get to see all the other ships :-)

Eye of the Wind in the foreground

Left to right Alexander von Humbolt (green sails), either Sagres II or Eagle, Prince William, Dewaruci, to the right Mir.

Barkentine Kaliakra and barque Sagres II during the race start off Waterford.

Foreground: the people of Sagres II. Background: Artemis, Eye of the Wind, Alexander von Humbold.

Kruzenshtern and Tarangini

A rival at sunset... probably Sagres II or Eagle, as they were the only barques near us.

It's not much, but it's a breeze.

No wind means a 'reading day'. Relaxing in the bowsprit netting.

Quiet evening at sea.

The helmsman during an evening watch.

Lookout, 11:15 pm.

People hanging out on deck in Cherbourg.

The Cisne Branco, (sister of Stad Amsterdam, which I'll be sailing on in september) with the moon in Cherbourg.

Europa's decks as seen from the foremast platform.

At sea, in a breeze (finally!) Me doing repairs.

Wind! Look, we're moving! (you have no idea how exciting this was after days of bobbing about)

At sea, lunch on deck.

People having lunch.

Jay at the helm on a nice day.

The breeze picks up enough to take in the skysail. Someone is on their way to furl it.

Tired racing pigeon hitching a ride... about to go into the charthouse.

Force 7. Good sailing, but short seas, so very bumpy. Deckwash!

The below of Europa

Deck-barbie in Whitby.

Asgard II coming into Whitby.

Date: 2005-07-31 08:53 pm (UTC)Those pictures are fantastic. Lovely ships! And as far as I can see, you had a wonderful time! I really wish I could do something like that some day, too. *sniffles and wipes tear of homesickness from eye*
Was it sort of a regatta you participated in? Or a sailing training? Or what was it? I don't know much about those things, sorry.
Thank you muchly for sharing those photos!

It's like a huge regatta/meet-up/cruise in company for those ships. The race ports organise all kinds of cool stuff and everything is in the spirit of international understanding. Pretty neat.
And you *can* sail on ships like that. If you're serious, let me know if you want me find some ships that sail somewhere accessible for you. I'm seriously considering a uni project to promote tall ship sailing..

Date: 2005-08-01 07:52 am (UTC)But I'll keep it in mind, and as soon as I'm done with my job training and have a well-paid job, I'll do one! :D
Hmm - accessible... I'm living in Southern Germany, but I'd be willing to travel ANYWHERE to be on a tall ship! :)

Date: 2005-08-01 07:57 am (UTC)I've started with the Tall Ships Youth Trust, and consider them pretty good in giving you some basic experience and a taste of life at sea. Keep an eye on their special offers page and you might bump into something you can afford. site: http://www.tallships.org/

Date: 2005-08-01 09:09 am (UTC)My jeans? I'm fairly sure my 1 pair came home with me... Or do you mean the 3/4th shorter ones? And which shirt? Socks are entirely possible. Just hang on to it and we'll get it across at some point.

Date: 2005-08-01 08:20 am (UTC)okay i'll be frank; i am jealous beyond words.
we were two mates from black pearl sails in dublin and we missed the races by a few days, flying out to paris, and i was biting my own ass over it. argh. i so have to go next year.
all the ships at waterford! it's breathtaking. argh.
and cherbourg is so pretty. did you get to go ashore? i lost my heart in normandy i'm afraid.
okay, you take care and all. i'll sit here cursing silently.

Date: 2005-08-01 10:13 pm (UTC)The pictures are great and if you look at picture 3 in the sequence here (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_pictures/4715175.stm) there's a shot of Europa coming into Newcastle.
It does appear thought that you were on the best leg of the voyage as several ships haven't made it to Norway and the Polish ship Smialy hasn't been in contact since Saturday morning! :-(
Details here (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/tyne/4736497.stm).

Date: 2005-08-02 04:53 am (UTC)I've heard about the problems; a lot of ships have retired the race... hopefully the crew of Smialy is safe and sound and in contact soon.

Date: 2005-08-25 07:26 pm (UTC)I just got back from a week at SAIL in Amsterdam, saw Europa there, she is truly beautiful!!
Kruzenshtern was one of my favourite ships there, as were Vespucci and Mir. I think the Russians are pretty lucky for having all these incredible ships (saw Sedov there too). Thanks for posting all these wonderful pictures!! You're so lucky for sailing on Europa! :)
